What is the difference between a psychologist, clinical psychologist, psychiatrist, and counsellor? PDF Print E-mail

Psychologists are experts in human behaviour and assist people to find ways of functioning more efficiently and get more out of every day life. They are able to assess, diagnose and treat people with a wide range of emotional and behavioural problems and help them cope more effectively with everyday stressors. Psychologists study human behaviour in their undergraduate psychology degree before undertaking a further two years of supervised clinical experience and gaining registration.

Clinical Psychologists in addition to fulfilling the requirements of a registered psychologist, have also completed two years of formal, post-graduate (Masters level) clinical training in an accredited, university based program. Further, a clinical psychologist is required to complete two more years supervised clinical training as well as continuing education on an annual basis. There are also clinical psychologists who use the title "Doctor", and these highly qualified clinicians have also completed a PhD in psychology or a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology (PsyD).

Psychologists and clinical psychologists do not have a medical degree, however, many study for a similar number of years to specialise in various aspects of psychology. Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists cannot prescribe medication; their treatments are based on changing behaviour without medication. There is a considerable amount of evidence showing psychological treatments are effective.

Psychiatrists have a medical degree, which involves six years of studying general medicine, followed by further study of the mind to specialise in psychiatry. They specialise in treating mental illness, for example schizophrenia. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication. Some combine medication with other forms of therapy.

Counsellors listen to clients personal problems and provide advice. Currently in Australia, anyone can call themselves a counsellor or a psychotherapist. There is varied training available, from a Masters in Counselling to a few weeks by correspondence.
